Stephanié Rossouw is a senior lecturer in Economics with the School for Social Science and Public Policy at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. Her primary area of expertise lies with well-being economics, with secondary interests in development economics. She co-developed the first real-time measure of a nation’s evaluative mood using Big Data. Subsequently, she is the country director of the Gross National Happiness Today Project (GNH. Today).
Stephanié played an instrumental role in Statistics New Zealand adopting the GNH as an official statistic, and they are now reporting it in their COVID-19 portal in real-time (https://www.stats.govt.nz/experimental/covid-19-data-portal)
Apart from publishing research on well-being, Stephanié is also heavily involved with COVID-19 research projects. In 2021, work she co-authored appeared in PLoS ONE, South African Journal of Economics and Applied Research in Quality of Life.
As a result of their contribution to COVID-19 research, Stephanié and her co-authors were Nominated for the Human Science Research Council-Universities of South Africa Medal in Social Sciences and Humanities Award.
Their most recent project includes creating a COVID-19 Vaccine Attitude Index, using a live feed of tweets extracted for nine countries. Through both sentiment and emotion analyses, Stephanié and her co-author can see in real-time how peoples’ sentiments and emotions change in relation to the index. Additionally, they are determining factors related to the index and, when addressed, may increase the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines.
Since 2012, Stephanié fulfils the role of editor of economics at the Journal of Happiness Studies. She is also the Vice-President of Finance for the International Society for Quality of Life Studies (ISQOLS). Additionally, Stephanié serves on the Board of Directors and is a Research Fellow with the Global Labor Organization (GLO).
Apart from research, Stephanié has a heart for teaching. Especially to first-year students who offers an opportunity for her to show them the real-life applications of economics. Stephanie’s passion for teaching is evident with her receiving awards for the Best Lecturer in the Faculty of Business and Law and the Best Lecturer of The Year for the entire Auckland University of Technology.
